Daniel Avery has spent more than a decade building a back-catalogue of albums, EPs, live performances and DJ mixes that have earned him an assured place in the continuum of British electronic music, forging a deep understanding of its past with a personal vision of its future. In short, a singular sound and philosophy that has nonetheless been ceaseless in its evolution.

2022’s ‘Ultra Truth’ cemented Avery’s constant evolution as a producer and collaborator at its highest point yet, a distorted fever dream described by Avery as “riled, determined and alive.” Featuring contributions from contemporaries including Marie Davidson, A.K. Paul, Jonnine (HTRK), HAAi, Sherelle, Kelly Lee Owens and James Massiah, ‘Ultra Truth’ pushed to the forefront a decade of experimentation and emotion, whether amid the searing breakbeats of ‘Wall of Sleep’ or ‘Lone Swordsman’, his spectral, worthy tribute to mentor and friend Andrew Weatherall.

“Gimmick free machine funk of the highest order”, was Weatherall’s summation of Avery in 2012, his endorsement helping begin a journey that gathered much momentum soon after with the release of his debut album, ‘Drone Logic’. Now considered an undisputed modern classic, it began a decade-long partnership with Erol Alkan’s imprint Phantasy Sound, forging a creative collaboration between Avery and another of his formative cultural influences.

‘Drone Logic’ was followed in 2018 with ‘Song for Alpha’, 2020’s emotive double ‘Love & Light’, and ‘Illusion of Time’, recorded in collaboration with Alessandro Cortini, revered musician and Nine Inch Nails member, Alessandro Cortini. Meanwhile, ‘Together In Static’ documented Avery’s hopeful creative practice throughout the fog of the pandemic, conceived for a cathartic live show ultimately performed at Hackney Church in London in 2021.

The diverse textures of Avery’s music, now spanning ambient and hardcore alongside the steady throb of contemporary techno and his instinctive indie rock sensibilities, each equally informed a long-awaited live show that premiered in 2022, touring Europe and Australia. In parallel, DJing remains a constant at clubs and festivals internationally. Whether solo, often for marathon sets, or back-to-back in the company of like-minded souls including Helena Hauff, DJ Stingray, IMOGEN or Richard Fearless, with whom he forms a partnership and party known as ‘Goo’, Avery’s record collection remains a gateway into new possibilities.

Underlining his lifelong passion for club culture, 2024 saw Avery revisit his ‘Divided Love’ party at Fabric. Once more personally curating three rooms of the influential London club, as well as releasing a compelling new single on the club’s Fabric Originals sub-label, it continues a musical kinship that began with his Fabriclive66 mix CD in 2012.
